The endocannabinoid system — a brief introduction
The endocannabinoid system (ECS) is a biological system present in all mammals, including dogs. It was only identified by scientists in the early 1990s, which is why it doesn’t feature in older veterinary textbooks — but it’s one of the most important regulatory systems in the body.
The ECS is made up of three core components:
Endocannabinoids — molecules produced naturally by the body
Receptors — proteins on cell surfaces that endocannabinoids bind to
Enzymes — that break down endocannabinoids once they’ve done their job
The ECS acts as a master regulator, helping to maintain balance (homeostasis) across multiple body systems — including pain response, inflammation, immune function, mood, appetite, and sleep.
What are CB1 and CB2 receptors?
There are two main types of cannabinoid receptor: CB1 and CB2.
CB1 receptors are found predominantly in the brain and central nervous system. They’re responsible for the psychoactive effects of THC (the compound in cannabis that causes a “high”) because THC binds strongly to CB1 receptors. Compounds that activate CB1 receptors can cause sedation, altered perception, and in dogs — who are more sensitive than humans — serious adverse reactions.
CB2 receptors are found primarily in immune tissue, the spleen, the gastrointestinal tract, and peripheral organs. They play a central role in regulating inflammation, immune responses, and pain signalling — without any psychoactive effects. Activating CB2 receptors does not get your dog “high” and does not carry the risks associated with CB1 activation.
Why do CB2 receptors matter for your dog?
When your dog’s CB2 receptors are functioning well and being adequately activated, the ECS can regulate inflammation effectively, support immune function, manage pain signals, and help keep your dog in a balanced, healthy state.
When CB2 receptor activity is insufficient — due to age, illness, poor diet, or chronic stress — the regulatory function of the ECS becomes impaired. This is associated with chronic inflammation, immune dysfunction, heightened pain sensitivity, and anxiety.
Think of CB2 receptor activation like maintaining a well-tuned regulatory system. When it’s working well, everything else tends to work better too.

The body produces its own endocannabinoids to activate CB2 receptors — but it needs the right building blocks to do so.
